(WXIN/WTTV): Lawmakers passed legislation renaming the U.S. Post Office in Elwood after a police officer who was killed in 2022.
According to a news release, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the legislation Wednesday to honor Noah Shahnavaz. Carl Boards II of Anderson is facing felony murder and resisting arrest charges for his alleged role in the shooting death of the fallen officer during a traffic stop on July 31, 2022.
Boards was ruled competent to stand trial in July following the completion of mental health evaluations.
"While we can never fully repay Noah and his family, the renaming of the Elwood Post Office after his name will serve as a lasting reminder of his ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms," said Rep. Spartz. "I want to thank my House colleagues for their support in honoring this true American hero."
The legislation, which was led by Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-Ind. District 5), will now be considered by the U.S. Senate.
