LMPD releases body cam footage of Smoketown shooting where man, 2 officers were injured

Louisville Metro Police released body camera footage Wednesday of the officer shooting in the city's Smoketown neighborhood where two officers and a young man were struck during a traffic stop involving a stolen vehicle.

The video shows LMPD Fourth Division officer James Walsh arriving at a scene on Roselane Street, where a man, identified as 19-year-old Jeremiah Thompson, was standing near a parked grey 2018 Kia Soul that'd previously been reported stolen. Fourth Division Officer Brendan Koerner is seen later in the video as he arrived to assist.

Seconds later, Thompson can be heard denying he was driving the car, although the video shows him repeatedly telling officers his shoe was inside the vehicle and asking to retrieve it. After obtaining some initial information and checking the vehicle, Walsh and Koerner then begin to detain Thompson, though neither officer appear to inform him of the detainment before moving to place him in handcuffs.

Louisville Police Chief Paul Humphrey said Wednesday the shoe found in the vehicle gave officers probable cause to detain Thompson and the fact he was driving was revealed through later interviews. Police officials could not offer further details on why Thompson's arrest citation said he admitted to driving the vehicle at the scene.

In the video, Thompson refused to comply with officers' requests and was tackled to the ground, laying on his hands to prevent himself from being cuffed, and can be heard repeating that he hadn't committed a crime. After more than two minutes, Officer Laxman Acharya, also with the Fourth Division, arrived and attempted to use an expandable baton to gain leverage over one of Thompson's arms.

During the altercation, Thompson fired a single bullet from a gun, striking himself in the wrist and arm. The bullet also struck Koerner's hand before hitting Acharya in the leg. The gun was recovered by Walsh and officers applied self-aid while waiting for additional first responders.

"I can tell you if that suspect had cooperated, that wouldn't have happened," Humphrey said. "So regardless how it happened, it's his fault, still."

Humphrey added that the case is still active and being investigated by the performance review board.

The two officers and Thompson were transported to UofL Hospital in stable condition. Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said he and Deputy Chief Emily McKinley visited the officers the night of the shooting, who were "in good spirits and on the road to recovery."

Koerner, who joined LMPD in June 2018, and Acharya, who joined the department in November 2021, are still recovering and will be on medical leave for an unknown timeframe, Humphrey said.

According to court records, Thompson is charged with one count of resisting arrest, one count of assault on a police officer, one count of assault on a police officer, one count of wanton endangerment and one count of receiving stolen property.

Thompson is scheduled to make his next court appearance in January.
