The woman who struck and killed a Lakota student in a crosswalk in May was sentenced to a month in jail Wednesday.
Kaitlyn Hyde, 26, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor vehicular homicide in October. Butler County Area Court Judge Kevin McDonough also sentenced Hyde to two months of house arrest and two years of probation following her incarceration.
McDonough also ordered Hyde to complete 250 hours of community service.
In May, 15-year-old Aspen Dylan Runnels was walking in a crosswalk toward the end of the school day at the Lakota East Freshman Campus and was struck by Hyde. She told investigators she was adjusting her baby's pacifier at the time of the crash
Aspen died of his injuries less than two weeks later.
In September, a second student was struck while using a crosswalk near Lakota West High School just before 7 a.m. The 17-year-old suffered serious injuries, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. There's no record that the driver in that crash was charged.
The two crashes have prompted the district to evaluate pedestrian safety in the district.
