YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) -- In a new clever attempt to swindle the unsuspecting, scammers have taken to impersonating law enforcement officers and providing false contact information.

Most recently, the Youngstown Police Department warned that scammers are falsely listing the department's phone number as 330-748-5021 -- which it is not. Do not contact this number in an attempt to reach police or answer any incoming calls from it.

Police say when people call the number they are greeted with a voice recording providing the correct mailing address of the station despite the incorrect phone number, adding to the deceit.

If you receive a call from the fraudulent number, you should not respond -- but if you do, certainly don't provide any personal information.

YPD says always verify contact information directly from the department's official website or by calling the main non-emergency number at 330-747-7911 or 330-742-8929.
