CASCADE COUNTY, Mont. - Authorities are conducting an extensive search at the Republic Services Landfill near Floweree, Cascade County. This search is part of ongoing investigations into the disappearance of Alicia Wood.
A press conference was held on Wednesday to address the ongoing investigation and provide transparency to the public.
Wood, 46, was reported missing on November 30, 2024. She was last seen on November 22, 2024, in Conrad, Montana where she resides. Montana Highway Patrol found her car, a 2005 black Cadillac, abandoned on Highway 91 between Conrad and Brady on November 27, 2024.
Conrad Police Department was informed on December 2, 2024, that the Montana Highway Patrol had impounded Wood's car. Officers observed blood in and around the vehicle, prompting them to request assistance from the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI).
Conrad Police Chief Cory Smith stated that their investigation suggests Wood is likely deceased and her body may be in the landfill. However, specific details leading to this belief have not been disclosed.
The landfill has been designated a crime scene, with a large police presence expected. Sheriff Slaughter emphasized the need for transparency and thanked the community for their support, stating, "The operation will require a lot of personnel and equipment, and the community has really stepped up."
The search, which is both costly and labor-intensive, involves multiple agencies, including the Great Falls Police Department, DCI, Conrad PD, Pondera County Sheriff's Office, and Cascade County Public Works. Heavy equipment will be used for excavation, and safety measures following OSHA and EPA requirements are in place.
A person of interest is reportedly in custody on an unrelated charge. CCSO Sheriff Jesse Slaughter said they are sharing that information publicly because they believe there is likely no immediate danger to the public.
The investigation continues, with no current estimate on how long officials will remain at the landfill. The search is proceeding as quickly as safety permits, given the health requirements and volume of waste involved.
