A burglary suspect who allegedly raised a gun in a confrontation with police near Collinsville was shot and seriously wounded when officers fired their weapons.
The suspect was being sought Monday night by Madison County Sheriff's Office deputies and Collinsville Police Department officers, according to a statement by Illinois State Police.
The shooting occurred in the 9000 block of Rene Avenue in the State Park Place community in Madison County.
Illinois State Police officers are investigating the shooting at the request of the Madison County Sheriff's Office and the Collinsville Police Department.
The suspect was one of multiple people wanted in connection with a residential burglary in unincorporated Pontoon Beach after deputies from the sheriff's office had responded to a call about the burglary at 8:22 p.m. Monday.
"The suspects fled the scene before officers arrived," state police wrote in the statement.
A short time later, the Collinsville Police Department located the suspect vehicle and attempted a traffic stop but police said the driver of the vehicle fled.
Police found the vehicle crashed but it was unoccupied.
Collinsville and Madison County "officers set up a perimeter around the area before locating one of the suspects walking on Rene Avenue with a firearm in their hand," police said.
"The suspect reportedly disobeyed police orders and raised the firearm, and officers fired, striking the suspect," according to the statement. "The suspect was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. No officers were injured. There is no further information at this time."
The name of the suspect was not released.
Chief Deputy Marcos Pulido of the Madison County Sheriff's Office referred questions about the shooting to Illinois State Police. A representative from the Collinsville Police Department could not be reached for comment Thursday.
