Historians Beliefs Flipped Upside Down After Hidden City Is Found With Villa Twice The Size Of The White House

Still today, researchers continue to find lost cities, or important abandoned locations that have been buried underneath the surface over thousands of years. One of the stunning discoveries took place just a few months ago by NASA, discovering an abandoned city under ice in Greendland. The area known as Camp Century was under ice, and was once used as a secret U.S. military base.

As for this discovery in question, it was supposed to be a location of vital importance, home to a king. However, his death completely changed plans, and the massive underground area was left abandoned even before it was completed.

The discovery turned prior beliefs upside down, while researchers were able to unlock the mysterious city with minimal costs. Let's find out the importance of the site, and how the discovery came about by Jörg Fassbinder and his team.

Abandoned Ancient Assyrian Capital Reveals The Area Was A Lot More Developed Than Researchers Thought

Thanks to research conducted by Jörg Fassbinder of Ludwig-Maximilians-University, new secrets have been unlocked regarding the forgotten ancient Assyrian capital of Dur-Sharrukin, known as Khorsabad, Iraq today. Researchers just uncovered that the capital had been abandoned for 2,700 years, and was left behind even before its completion. However, the discovery does prove that the ancient Assyrian capital was a lot more developed than what researchers previously thought.

So why was the developed area abandoned? The Greek Reporter reveals the death of King Sargon II, abandoned the plans after he was killed in battle. The location was supposed to serve as his new empire.

What Was Found In The Underground Capital?

Jörg Fassbinder and his team uncovered:

Multiple buildings Villa, twice the size of the White House with 127 rooms

Fassbinder said of the stunning discovery, "Every day we discovered something new. When the data were visualized as grayscale images, ghostly outlines emerged of structures as deep as six to ten feet (two to three meters) below ground. The data revealed the location of the city's water gate, possible palace gardens, and five enormous buildings, including a 127-room villa twice the size of the US White House. These and other discoveries are evidence that, at least for some time, Khorsabad was a living city."

Excavations Were Not Needed For The Extraordinary Find

Adding to the impressive discovery, Jörg Fassbinder and his team were able to limit costs thanks to the use of a magnetometer. Fassbinder says it was "like having an X-ray of features beneath the ground." The team was able to make the discovery without drawing attention to themselves, while also limiting costs.

"All of this was found with no excavation," Fassbinder said. "Excavation is very expensive, so the archaeologists wanted to know in detail what they could expect to achieve by digging. The survey saved time and money. It's a necessary tool before starting any excavation."

The extraordinary findings were presented on December 9th at AGU's 2024 Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.
