Driver crashes through Pawtucket couple's fence, takes off

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) -- It was early Sunday morning when Roberta Beaton was startled awake by a loud bang.

Beaton told 12 News that, since her York Avenue home is surrounded by businesses, it's not uncommon for her to hear loud noises.

"I sat up and looked around," she explained, noting that her dog didn't bark or seem bothered by the noise. "But I didn't think much of it."

It wasn't until Beaton's fiancé went to let the dog out in the morning that the couple realized exactly what had happened overnight.

"He was devastated," Beaton said. "He came running inside and said, 'You have to get out of bed and come see.'"

Beaton said it appears a driver crashed through their fence and into their backyard, destroying their shed and smashing their brand new scooter.

"We felt violated," Beaton said. "This was our dream house."

"We just sold our four-bedroom Cape in East Providence to find something smaller, quieter and more affordable," she continued. "We spent the summer working on it and getting it just the way we wanted it ... and within 10 minutes it was destroyed."

Though Beaton is heartbroken, she's also grateful that the driver didn't hit their house or their vehicles.

"I'm thankful nobody was hurt," she said. "This stuff is replaceable, but it's just disheartening, especially because we had just made it into our perfect house."

Thankfully, Beaton said Traprock Landscaping owner Matthew Sagar offered to repair their fence free of charge.

"It's the greatest blessing," she said, referring to Sagar's selfless gesture. "There are good people out there."

The Pawtucket Police Department confirmed that it is investigating the crash and searching for the driver responsible.

Beaton said the driver left behind several pieces of their vehicle, including a chunk of their front bumper. While she remains hopeful that her insurance will cover the cost to repair the damage, her message to the driver responsible is clear.

"Do the right thing," Beaton said. "Come forward and at least apologize ... It's not right the way you destroyed our dreams and just drove off."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Pawtucket Police Department by calling (401) 727-9100.
