State police catch speeding drivers, including five going over 100 mph

The holidays are no exception for distracted driving and speeding, and the New Hampshire State Police have troopers looking for violators from high in the sky.

Troopers observed 52 drivers committing driving violations during a traffic enforcement initiative on Monday morning, some traveling faster than 100 mph on Interstate 93 in Salem. The violations included speeding, distracted driving, following too closely and reckless driving, according to a news release.

Of the violations, 20 drivers were seen traveling 90 miles per hour or greater, and five drivers "were driving recklessly, traveling faster than 100 mph," the release said.

Reckless driving can lead to a $620 fine with an additional mandatory penalty assessment and a 60-day loss of driver's license. The standard fine for traveling at speeds of 86 miles per hour or faster is $434, according to the release.

"Troopers will continue to work with their partners at the New Hampshire Office of Highway Safety to conduct focused traffic enforcement to reduce speeds, prevent serious crashes, and ensure the safety of the residents and visitors to the Granite State this holiday season," the release said.
