Walnut Hills eatery lands spot on New York Times list of best bakeries

A Cincinnati eatery is garnering national acclaim.

Cafe Mochiko in Walnut Hills earned a spot on the New York Times' list of 22 best bakeries in America.

Operating as a bakery by day and a ramen restaurant at night, Cafe Mochiko is locally renowned for its Cincinnati chili-style ramen, however, the Times recognized the work of Elaine Uykimpang Bentz, a James Beard finalist in 2023 for Best Pastry Chef in America.

"The most memorable pastries at this Ohio sensation -- prepare to stand in line -- are eye-catching and often straddle the border of sweet and savory," New York Times food writer Brett Anderson wrote.

Anderson specifically noted the ube halaya croissant and sweet corn bibingka as highlights from the bakery menu. The ube halaya croissant is filled with purple yam jam and sweet yam cream. The sweet corn bibingka is a sweet and savory corn rice cake with a cream cheese center and topped with shredded white cheddar.

Cafe Mochiko started as a pop-up but opened its brick-and-mortar location in 2021. It is operated by Uykimpang Bentz and her husband, Erik Bentz.
