Legendary Black Sabbath Drummer Bill Ward Celebrates Nicko McBrain: "I Hope Your Journeys Will Be Safe"

Helping form Black Sabbath in the late 1960s, Bill Ward, alongside Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, and Geezer Butler, watched as the band stood at the forefront of heavy metal. While releasing several hit albums and selling millions, Ward struggled with alcohol and drug abuse. He eventually left the heavy metal band after a dispute with his contract in 2012. Although loving his time with Black Sabbath, the drummer recently took a moment to praise Iron Maiden's Nicko McBrain and his contributions to heavy metal.

Sharing a post on his Instagram page, Ward showered McBrain with love and support. He even loved the idea that McBrain could always return. "Dear Nicko. In retiring to meet new horizons, I hope your journeys will be safe. I think it is so respectful and dignified that your drum chair will be available to you for any future Iron Maiden recordings, an idea that leads without fanfare, an idea that lays in tandem with any lick or rudiment, on any day. Respectfully, Bill Ward."

For those who might need a refresher, McBrain announced he was stepping away from the band after four decades of touring and performing. "What can I say? Touring with Maiden the last 42 years has been an incredible journey! To my devoted fan base, you made it all worthwhile and I love you! To my devoted wife, Rebecca, you made it infinitely easier and I love you!" To my kids, Justin and Nicholas, thank you for understanding the absences and I love you!" He continued, "To my friends that are always there for me, I love you! To my bandmates, you made it a dream come true and I love you!"

Fans appreciated the praise from Ward as many commented, "I think Nicko leaving Iron Maiden, at least from playing live and touring, and the dignified manner in which he 'left', has given Bill another unenviable opportunity for comparative reflection. Bill's strength, resilience, and compassion is boundless - wishing Nicko every success, and acknowledging his dignified, respectful, and respected departure, is a testament to his enduring ability to convey love, hope, and optimism, despite the sorrowful and tragic pages of history."

Sadly, due to McBrain's retirement news, he will not be part of the upcoming Run For Your Lives tour. Taking place over 2025 and 2026, Iron Maiden will tour the world with Simon Dawson behind the drums.
