The Stearns County Attorney's Office filed charges Monday against a man who allegedly broke into Security Coin and Pawn in downtown St. Cloud. The man said the store was unlocked, and he needed a place to sleep.
Charges stem from a Friday morning arrest, court records state. Officers were called to the store at roughly 9 a.m. Friday after a store employee said he found the store in "shambles."
When officers arrived, they found an opened penny roll of rare 1929 pennies. The employee stated two guns were out of place.
Officers conducted a walkthrough of the business with the store's employee, court records state. When they made it to the store's basement they allegedly found items belonging to a 57-year-old man from Princeton. Officers found the man hiding in the women's bathroom shortly after. Authorities allegedly found four of the 1929 pennies and the building's keys on the man.
The defendant told officers he was looking for a place to sleep, and one of the building's doors was unlocked at roughly 3 a.m., so he allegedly went inside, the criminal complaint states. He allegedly told officers he didn't intend to steal anything but only move things around to better see.
The Princeton man allegedly admitted to moving a gun to the basement but said he didn't plan to steal the firearm. After the officers headed to the basement, court records allege the man said he went into the women's bathroom to avoid being found.
On Monday, the Stearns County Attorney's Office filed felony charges for possessing a gun and entering without consent with the intent to steal.
The possession charge, if convicted, could carry up to 15 years in prison and/or a $30,000 fine while the burglary charge could hold up to five years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.
