An Iowa woman who rode RAGBRAI before getting a double-lung transplant is back home in time for Christmas.
"Woooooo," cheered Barb Heenan as she walked out of the hospital Tuesday, just in time to make it home for Christmas.
Heenan has scleroderma, an autoimmune disease that led to her needing a double-lung transplant.
"I'm out here raising awareness for scleroderma, which is an autoimmune disease that is progressive that I was diagnosed with 30 years ago. So this is a long time coming," Heenan told KCCI in July when she was riding RAGBRAI.
Heenan rode RAGBRAI this year with her oxygen tanks, covering a total of 242 miles.
Barb's husband says he asked her if she wanted a wheelchair as she left the hospital, and she said no. She walked into the hospital three weeks ago, and she wanted to walk out, too.
