A multibillion-dollar business is taking steps to better serve the Texas Hill Country with multimillion-dollar alterations. Now residents along I-35 will have even more access to reliable shopping.

Walmart distribution center No. 6016 in New Braunfels is anticipating a $19.5 million renovation that is expected to start just before Valentine's Day, according to a Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) filing. TDLR filings are subject to change without notice.

The scope of the work on the 681,922-square-foot facility includes a "selective demo; new exterior door, material handling equipment, electrical equipment; fire suppression and compressed air updates."

Construction on the warehouse is estimated to begin on February 10, 2025, aiming for completion on March 24, 2026, according to the TDLR filing.

"As far as the renovation, it includes the addition of robotics and automation systems that will improve how merchandise is stored and processed through the facility," Walmart Corporate Communications Senior Manager Ashley Nolan said in an email to MySA. "This will provide a more consistent, predictable and higher-quality delivery service to our stores and customers. The technology enables us to ship nearly double the number of cases compared to a traditional facility, without any increase in square footage."

The Walmart distribution center has served the community since 1987 and holds the title as the fifth oldest distribution center in the company. Last year, Walmart filed paperwork for a $21 million renovation expected to be completed over the summer that included the same scope of work as the new TDLR filing.

Previously, the facility underwent an $8 million expansion in 2014, which added shipping and receiving doors for loading docks, the report stated.
