(WGHP) -- Children around the world are anticipating a visit from Santa tonight. That means bedtime may be tough. In Mommy Matters, here are five ways to help get the kids to sleep on Christmas Eve.
Start by keeping the kids physically active this morning and this afternoon. Don't let them nap or play computer games all day. Keep them busy. Have them color placemats or make name tags for Christmas Day lunch. Have them make ornaments for the tree, or let them help you make Christmas cookies.
This evening, create a relaxing environment. Dim the lights and gather the family for a Christmas movie. Read Christmas stories or just spend family time together in a nice, quiet atmosphere.
Avoid sugar and caffeine. That's hard to do this time of year. Try a nice glass of milk or hot tea, and if you want something that looks festive, go for unsweetened cherry juice. It has amino acids that help produce melatonin which can help you sleep.
Do a bedtime countdown. This is especially good for younger children who don't understand the concept of time yet. Tell them it's one hour before bedtime, 30 minutes before bedtime, and 10 minutes before bedtime. That lets them know bedtime is coming and helps them mentally prepare.
Finally, turn off the electronics. No computers, tablets or phones at least an hour before bedtime. And turn the music off too. The less stimuli, the faster the kids will fall asleep.
