Watch Netflix's new trailer for the series, which sees Peter Sutherland leave Washington D.C. for an explosive new mission.
Before The Night Agent's big showcase on NFL Christmas Day, Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) was spending the holiday sitting by the phone in his tiny FBI basement. Thanks to the new season 2 trailer (streaming below), it's clear that Sutherland's lonely days of waiting are over. There's "credible evidence of a leak in the CIA," according to the teaser. "Sutherland was investigating. He's gone AWOL."
Where Will The Night Agent Season 2 Take Place?
From the new trailer, it appears that The Night Agent is headed to Thailand. After that? New York City. "We'll be in a different part of the world exploring different characters than we had in season 1," Ryan told Comicbook.com. "Essentially we're going to be telling a whole brand-new story, which is exciting and scary."
While fans eagerly wait to see what happens next, Ryan explained that his team is trying to make the second season just as thrilling as the first. "With the high bar that season 2 set for audience expectations, we feel that pressure too," he said. "So we're just going to do our best to tell a story that feels within The Night Agent universe, but that feels new, fresh, and exciting."
What Could Happen in The Night Agent Season 2?
Not long after the show's premiere, Netflix quickly announced plans to renew the series for two more seasons. There's only one problem: The Night Agent is based on a single novel, meaning that there's no more material to adapt moving forward.
In a previous interview with Deadline, Ryan told fans that he's envisioning the future of Night Agent as stand alone stories. "The initial pitch for this show that we sold to Netflix was that each season would tell its own, mostly self-enclosed, a beginning, middle and end story, and any future seasons would include a few but not most of the characters that we saw in the previous season," he said. Potentially, there's no shortage of Night Agents.
What Characters Will Return in The Night Agent, Season 2?
If Netflix plans to make The Night Agent an anthology series, much like HBO's The White Lotus, it's possible that Basso would only return in a limited capacity. He did end the first season with a potential new mission, but the series also starred Hong Chau -- who was nominated by the Academy last year for her role in The Whale. Given her rise in acclaim and the success of spy thrillers on Netflix, there's no telling where the show could go next.
Sutherland's love interest, Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan) will certainly return. Meanwhile, developments are already underway for season 3's casting. According to Deadline, Genesis Rodriguez from Lioness is making her Night Agent debut in the upcoming third season. Until then, I hope you're waiting by the phone for your next mission.
