Shaadi Dot Com's founder and shark at Shark Tank India woke up and chose caramelized violence. The internet is buzzing with FM Nirmala Sitharaman-led GST council's clarification on taxation on various popcorn. For those who were off the grid, there's 5% GST on normal popcorns, 12% on labelled ones, and 18% on caramelized popcorns. The rationalization given by the FM is that salted popcorn falls under the category of 'Namkeens,' while caramelized ones are categorized under 'Sweets.' Per the GOI logic, any delicacy that is salted and spiced is a namkeen, and that which is caramelized is a sweet. The justification is even weirder and bizarre than the GST levied. The internet was in splits as reactions poured in, with several netizens dropping their own popcorn GST jokes. One user quipped, "SGST is salted GST and CGST is caramelized GST." "At this point it is hard to differentiate satire from reality," remarked another. When one user wrote, "Subah subah sarcasm?" Anupam Mittal replied, "Apna toh pura din hi." One netizen made an AI-generated meme captioned, "Popcorn joke maar raha hai -- tere ko dar nahi lagta?" "Sweet or salty, the real flavor is inefficiency," remarked another user, taking a dig at the state of affairs of the Indian economy under the current regime. "Popcorn mein sugar kaun daalta hai usmein to namak dalta hai Tata ka," jibed one. (Who adds sugar in popcorn? The real flavor is adding Tata's salt). A few netizens reacted to Anupam Mittal's tweet with memes.
