Drivers in Shasta County share experiences with traffic, rain during the holidays

SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. -- Christmas is almost here, and many folks in the Northstate are out and about on the roads.

AAA is predicting that a total of 107 million Americans will be traveling by car to their holiday destinations, based on data going through New Year's Day -- that's 2.5 million more people than last year.

Drivers in Redding told KRCR they're staying cautious during the busy traffic and rainy weather.

"Last night, I was actually out doing some Christmas shopping, and the roads were crazy," a local driver named Tyler said. "It was pouring rain, very hard to see, so everybody be careful out there."

Simon, a driver traveling through the Northstate on Dec. 24, said of his experience with traffic, "It was alright going over the passes. It was quite slow... By then it was dark, so the roads were very, very sort of dicey, and there was a sideways wind. I had to slow down a bit, but it was alright. It was good."

Data from AAA says, as of Dec. 24, Shasta County has the lowest average gas price out of all California counties at about $3.89 per gallon.

Elsewhere in the Northstate, Humboldt County is on the higher end of the scale, at around $4.95 per gallon.

For anyone getting behind the wheel over the holidays, California Highway Patrol Redding officers suggested safety tips for the rain including leaving earlier than usual, slowing down, defogging your windows, and never driving under the influence of any substance.
