CHESTERFIELD, Mo. - Over two months since the demolition began on the Chesterfield Mall, piles of rubble are beginning to build while making way for the new Downtown Chesterfield.

Demolition is expected to continue for another four months until completed. Construction of the new downtown complex will begin shortly after, featuring high-rise apartment buildings and hotels, retail, and a large park within the heart of it all.

Since 1976, the Chestefield Mall prospered and lived on for almost half a century. Despite undergoing demolition, the buildings that previously held Macy's and Dillard's will remain.

Plans include mixed-use development of apartments and businesses. Macy's will be redeveloped to include retail on the first floor and opening the upper levels as offices, where medical and data companies have already shown interest.

The Staenburg Group is leading the construction of the new downtown area. Tim Lowe, senior vice president of development of the new complex, told FOX 2 it will give city residents new options for entertainment and shopping.

"This is going to change the metropolitan area," Staenberg said. "It's going to be unique. There's not going to be anything like this anywhere else in the United States."

According to the Staenburg Group, the first phases of the developement could be complete by 2027.
