COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) - The Colleton County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a scam letter demanding payment.
They said a resident received a fraudulent letter from someone posting as the sheriff's office seeking payment for a judgement.
The letter asks the resident to contact the sender to arrange sending a money order or certified check.
"If you receive a letter like this, ignore their demands and throw it away. The Colleton County Sheriff's Office will never send a letter like this one demanding payment," the agency said.
Anyone who doubts the legitimacy of any mail you receive from the sheriff's office should give them a call to verify: 843-549-2211.
"Be safe, scams are prevalent not only during the holidays, but unfortunately all year long," the sheriff's office said.
