At former Tuxedo Junction site in Danbury, excavator tears down buildings for bank headquarters

DANBURY -- Under a light snowfall, demolition crews on Tuesday morning continued to tear down the old YMCA building, former Tuxedo Junction music venue and Hodge Insurance building on Main and White streets to clear the site for the new Ives Bank headquarters.

The work, which began earlier this month, is in preparation for the bank's planned four-story office building that will serve 70 employees.

Leaders of the 175-year-old bank, formerly known as Savings Bank of Danbury, described the demolition when it began as a milestone for the ongoing effort. The project itself is more than three years in the making, since it was first introduced to city leaders.

The bank plans to build a red brick building with white trim and a tower entrance, modeled after the former Feinson Department Store building, at the corner of Main and White streets. A screening wall and green space will replace the old Hodge Insurance building. A small park and open space will stand in place of the former Tuxedo Junction.

The demolition phase of the project is expected to take "several weeks," the bank previously said.
