The Butler County Coroner's Office has released the identity of the man fatally shot by a Middletown police officer on Christmas Eve.

Officials determined 50-year-old Christopher Gorak's preliminary cause of death to be gunshot wounds, but the preliminary manner of death is still under investigation.

The coroner's office said Gorak, of Middletown, died Tuesday evening and officials completed an autopsy before releasing his identity.

Officers were called to the 1000 block of Park Lane, according to Dan Hils, the president of Front Line Advisors, which represents the Middletown Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 36.

Hils said the officers responded to an apartment, knocked on the door and repeatedly identified themselves. He said a man opened the door and pointed a gun at the officers, and one officer fired his weapon in response killing the man.

Middletown police requested that the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation review the incident, which is in line with the department's policy, Hils said.

No officers were injured in the incident and the officer was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Officials have yet to release the officer's name.

The Enquirer has requested documents related to the incident from the Middletown Division of Police, including body camera footage.
