CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK)- As the song goes, "there's no place like home for the holidays," and that means folks are taking West Virginia's country roads to get there.
And with so many people out on the road, holiday travelers are reminding their fellow drivers that being safe and paying attention on the roadways are vital for everyone trying to get to their destinations and back home this holiday season.
"The big thing is watch traffic, watch road conditions and just be alert when you're traveling a long way," said Richard Ferda, a driver on his way to spend Christmas with his family in Louisville, Kentucky. "People have a tendency to maybe doze a little bit. You have to be careful."
According to the West Virginia Department of Transportation during the two-week period around the holidays, an estimated 1.46 million drivers will use the West Virginia Turnpike.
"Best advice is to plan early, expect delays, and then it's less stressful," said Mike Naydan.
Other drivers agreed, placing an emphasis on safe driving behaviors as well as paying attention to road conditions.
Ferda says traveling during the holidays is fun and seeing loved ones makes the season more exciting.
"It's festive because I'm going to see my kids and grandkids I haven't seen it for about seven months," said Ferda. "And it's just, it's the excitement of the season."
