How to use ChatGPT on WhatsApp: AI chatbot's phone number revealed

ChatGPT's integration into Siri on the latest iPhones and its dedicated app means it is now virtually inescapable on smartphones.

That's just as well if you regularly use the bot to help with work, recipe ideas, gift recommendations -- or just to procrastinate or search the web.

To get even more people using the AI helper, OpenAI has launched ChatGPT on the biggest messaging app in the world -- WhatsApp.

The expansion is great for anyone who has yet to try the digital boff. There's no need to create an account and, because it's on WhatsApp, it should be more easily accessible for less tech-savvy users who already use the messaging app to contact their loved ones.

You could even set it up for your mum or grandparents over Christmas and watch as they join the AI revolution.

Here's how to get started with ChatGPT on WhatsApp.

The quickest way to chat with ChatGPT is to follow this link to its WhatsApp account or by scanning the QR code below.

How does it work? ChatGPT now has its own phone number (1-800-242-8478), allowing you to add and message it on WhatsApp, where the bot has a verified business account.

If you want to save it to your contacts, tap the plus icon at the top of the chats tab and tap "new contact".

Now, enter its phone number, ensuring you change the country code to United States +1. That number again is: 1-800-242-8478 (or 1-800-CHATGPT).

Now, give the bot a name (it will still have ChatGPT listed under its designated moniker, along with a verified badge to prove it is the real deal) and click save.

Those located across the pond can also call ChatGPT using its number.

For anyone who frequently uses ChatGPT, the WhatsApp version will seem like a pretty basic experience. You can only send and receive texts, with all of the other major features (from file uploads to image generation) unsupported as they require you to be logged into a ChatGPT account.

That also means your chats won't be saved to access on other platforms. Meanwhile, paying users won't get all the perks that come with ChatGPT Plus, including the latest AI models and features.

Overall, this seems like it's geared toward newcomers already on WhatsApp, who may find it easier to interact with the bot using a familiar interface.

For its part, OpenAI is hoping the launch will boost uptake in parts of the world where users primarily access the web on their mobiles.

By leveraging WhatsApp's widespread popularity and low data usage, the move is designed to get ChatGPT into the hands of users with limited internet access and high data costs in developing countries.
