3 monitors and CPU temps

You are using an out of date browser. It may not display this or other websites correctly.

You should upgrade or use an alternative browser. So I wanted to make a little experiment... I have a 32 inch 4K monitor as my main display. When it's the only one I use (at the actual 4K resolution so no scaling involved) the idle temperature fluctuates between 50ºC and 55ºC, sometimes even going below 50... When the screen saver kicks in, waking up barely goes up to 60ºC and progressively goes back to the normal idle temperature.

Now when I have all 3 monitors plugged in, 2 of them are 24inch at 1920x1280, and I put the 32 inch at 2560x1440, which gives the exact same window size/proportions relative to the monitors, so it's a perfect setup for the eyes and navigation from one screen to another...and a very convenient real estate... In that scenario the CPU temperature averages at 58º, goes slightly above 60 sometimes, but mostly stays around 58...

My concern is when the screens go to sleep or when the screen saver starts... The Mac Pro says virtually silent (regardless of the screen saver used) but when it wakes up here's what happens: "waking up" from the screen saver state shows the temperature spiking to around 80º C (!). Waking up from sleep (i.e monitors going off), it's the same, plus the fact that the computer seems to be setting up the resolution again so the screens flicker 2 or 3 times for a few seconds before settling back to their respective resolution.

Once the image is back everything seems normal and the idle temperature is back to the 58ºC range...As it is right now when I write this. I'd like to know if there is room for concern about these temperatures and the monitors behavior when waking up from sleep as I don't want to risk damaging anything, starting with the Mac Pro internals... (One last detail I made sure the 3 monitors are on their own TB2 bus, the 4K is connected through a minidisplay-to-displayport cable, the other 2 monitors use a TB2-to-HDMI adapter, I'm not using the Mac Pro HDMI connection)

Thank you (and happy holidays to everyone too!)
