According to the publication, an unusual Google Maps image was captured in Tajueco, a small town of 56 people in north-central Spain about two and a half hours from Madrid. The photo, taken in October, appears to show a man handling several white bags from the trunk of his vehicle in broad daylight. (Google has since blurred that part of the image.) Spain's National Police then used the photo, along with other evidence, to ultimately arrest two individuals who were suspected of killing and dismembering a man who visited the area last year, the outlet said.
Subsequently, officials discovered remains buried in a nearby cemetery, a translated post on X reads. Footage in the post appears to show the Spanish National Police using construction equipment to excavate the area. According to El País, authorities found a buried, dismembered torso in an advanced state of decomposition on Dec. 11 and are still searching for the other body parts.
The investigation began in November 2023 after a cousin of the deceased started receiving mysterious WhatsApp messages from him, which stated he would soon leave the area and not take his phone, according to El País. However, the relative never believed he was actually speaking with his cousin, prompting him to contact local authorities.
Though the motive behind the man's killing is unclear, the outlet reported that the deceased came to the area a year ago to visit one of the arrested individuals, who was previously married to the other person detained.
Google press representatives declined to provide a statement to SFGATE regarding the image, instead referring to local Spanish authorities for more information. The National Police did not respond to SFGATE by the time of publication.
