Germany's 2023 Christmas market attack was forewarned -- but the email went to South Jersey

A car plowed into a busy outdoor Christmas market in the eastern German city of Magdeburg, killing at least two people and injuring dozens.

A South Jersey police department has received attention in the aftermath of a deadly 2023 attack on a crowd celebrating the holiday season in Germany.

The German publication Die Welt has reported that a woman tried to warn authorities last year about Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, who allegedly drove an SUV through an outdoor Christmas market in the city of Magdeburg on Dec. 20. The attack killed at least five people, including a 9-year-old boy, and injured approximately 200 people.

But the warning in September of 2023 was emailed to police in New Jersey's Berlin Borough, and not in Germany's capital of Berlin, Die Welt reported.

"There's a guy said he's going to kill random german citizens, please do something and arrest him as soon as possible," said the English-language email, according to a copy posted on X by Die Welt reporter Tim Röhn.

"I'm not in germany I don't know what to do," the sender added. "I found this email on google I hope it helps."

Berlin Borough Police Chief Michael Scheer said the email -- sent to berlinpolice.net from an address that's been redacted -- never came to his attention.

Had borough police been aware of the warning, according to Scheer, officers would have acted on it.

"Most likely the email was blocked by IT or went to spam if it was not intercepted," Scheer said, noting that the police department's email system routinely filters out apparent spam from countries around the world.

Those emails "are blocked by our IT department or go directly to junk folders," he said.

The email's writer said she had also had tried to warn Germany's Office for Migration and Refugees about al-Abdulmohsen, a psychiatrist who migrated from Saudi Arabia in 2006.

"But no answer yet," she said of that effort.
