BALLSTON SPA -- Stewart's Shops is slowly rolling back out tap-to-pay after pausing it since October due to scammers taking advantage of a software issue that the company said is impacting other stores across the nation.
The software issue did not lead to any data breaches, Stewart's Public Relations Manager Robin Cooper reiterated Tuesday.
"We got a software update and we started kind of slowly rolling it back out," he said. "It's not at all the locations yet but we are working on it."
The issue, which has impacted other companies, began in Texas, soon spreading across the country. The loophole had essentially allowed people who have illegitimate cards to pay using tap-to-pay. The transactions look as if they're legitimate but the company is actually losing out on money, according to Cooper.
He had said people were making small-dollar purchases, but the company was able to realize what was happening and pause the system.
Stewart's first noticed the issue in mid-October at locations in Greene, Ulster and Orange counties and contacted state police to investigate the issue. Cooper said police are still handling that investigation.
