The O'Brien County Sheriff's Office has identified an 18-year-old who died in a northwest Iowa crash early Saturday morning. According to a news release, deputies responded to the 5400 block of 500th Street near Paullina after being alerted of a possible collision through OnStar Services. A preliminary investigation says a 2023 Chevrolet Malibu traveling eastbound on 500th Street left the roadway, hit a driveway and rolled at least once. The driver has been identified as Carter Halverson, 18, of Paullina. He was pronounced dead at the scene.The crash is still under investigation. That number is 28 fewer than at the same point in 2023. Over the last five years, an average of 350 people have been killed in statewide crashes annually.
