Street in Central Business District reopens to pedestrians after partial building collapse

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) -- Officials with the City of New Orleans have announced that part of O'Keefe Avenue has re-opened to pedestrians after a partial building collapse in the Central Business District.

On Dec. 14, the New Orleans Fire Department reported that the brick facade of the building that houses the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities Turners' Hall had partially collapsed.

NOFD officials noted that crews identified cracks and shifting in exterior walls and a forward buckle.

Traffic was blocked within a one-mile radius of the building, and residents were asked to avoid the area.

On Tuesday, Dec. 24, city officials announced that the portion of O'Keefe Avenue that was closed due to the collapse has reopened to pedestrian traffic.

City officials said crews have been working to stabilize the building, and businesses in the impacted areas can now resume operations.
