A Middletown police officer fatally shot a man on Christmas Eve after officers were called to an apartment complex for a report of a fight, police union representatives said.
Officers were called to the 1000 block of Park Lane just after 7 p.m., according to Dan Hils, the president of Front Line Advisors, which represents the Middletown Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 36.
Hils said the officers responded to an apartment, knocked on the door and repeatedly identified themselves. He said a man opened the door and pointed a gun at the officers, and one officer fired his weapon in response killing the man.
Hils, the former president of the Cincinnati police union, said the dead suspect was a white male in his 50s. The name of the man has not been released.
Middletown police requested that the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation review the incident, which is in line with the department's policy, Hils said.
He said the officer, who has been with the department between three and four years, has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation takes place.
No officers were injured in the incident, Hils said. No arrests have been reported in connection with the incident.
"Everything seems very clean in the shooting with law, policy and procedure," Hils said.
Officials with the Middletown Police Department could not be immediately reached Tuesday night.
The Middletown Police Department is made up of between 80 and 90 officers serving approximately 51,000 residents. Middletown straddles Butler and Warren counties and sits about halfway between Cincinnati and Dayton.
