The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, Detention Center, Clerk of Court and Magistrate Office issued an alert about scam calls targeting people in that community.Officials said several people reached out to the sheriff's office recently about callers contacting them saying they have an outstanding arrest warrant for missing jury duty.Investigators said that the callers said if people did not send money to pay the fine, they would be arrested.Authorities said the calls also appear to be coming from spoofed numbers from the sheriff's office and clerk of court office.The sheriff's office said at least one person had lost $500 to the scam.In a statement the sheriff's office also said, "Please note this is a SCAM and these types of calls are not associated with any of these county government offices. The Sheriff's Office, Detention Center, Clerk of Court Office or Magistrate Office will NEVER, NEVER call you and threaten you with arrest and/or ask for you to send money in any form. We will always send a direct correspondence via the postal service for any business matters related to you from these offices. Then you can visit any of the offices in person to address any correspondence you receive in the mail. We also will send an officer to your residence if we have any arrest warrants in your name, but under NO CIRCUMSTANCES will we ever demand payment over the phone in lieu of an arrest."
