GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - It's the time of the year when almost everyone seems to be sending or receiving mail and packages and scammers are unfortunately taking advantage with "smishing" or "phishing" through text scams.
A United States Postal Inspector said the scam is an attempt to get personal identifying information or PII from customers.
"They might send a text message that looks like it's a legitimate text message from the postal service containing a link. We're warning folks - do not click on that link - it is not a legitimate message from the postal service," said Marjan Barrigan-Husted, U.S. Postal Inspector
Experts said if you get a text that says your package could not be delivered, don't respond, even if the message offers a "TEXT STOP" option.
Do not click any links and delete any suspicious texts, then block the phone number.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is actively investigating who's behind the smishing scams.
