MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The holiday season is in full swing, bringing with it the joys of giving and the stress of gridlocked roads.
Memphis residents are experiencing packed parking lots, long lines at gas stations and impatient drivers, making holiday travel more chaotic than ever. However, local drivers are sharing their strategies to stay safe on the roads amidst the hustle and bustle.
Andrea Nelson, a local shopper, described the challenges of navigating Memphis roads during this time of year. "It's people going fast, trying to get around you, trying to run you over," she said.
The heightened activity in parking lots and streets is turning a season meant for joy into one of stress for many.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported in 2022 that crashes increased by nearly 20% during the holiday season, often due to distracted driving and speeding.
Memphis drivers are seeing these trends firsthand.
Shelby Parson, a resident, noted how aggressive driving is a frequent issue.
"It's not just about getting from Point A to Point B," Parson said. "Some people are prioritizing safety and kindness, but not everyone's experience has been smooth."
Others, like Muncell Williams, shared proactive strategies for staying safe.
"I've been navigating these Memphis streets by being safe -- driving carefully and just being joyful to everyone," Williams said.
Another shopper offered a simple yet crucial reminder: "Don't drive distracted. Don't be on the phone and driving."
While the holidays can be stressful, safety should remain a priority. Experts recommend planning your routes ahead of time, leaving early to avoid rushing and staying focused while driving.
By taking small precautions, drivers can make the roads safer for everyone and maintain the joy of the holiday season.
