Missing Green Bay father found dead in Ozaukee County woods

The body of Benjamin Berendsen, a 37-year-old Green Bay father who had been missing since Nov. 26, was discovered early Wednesday morning in a heavily wooded area in Ozaukee County, authorities said.The Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office located Berendsen around 4:25 a.m. in a remote, swampy area east of Interstate 43 and north of Silver Beach Road in the Town of Belgium, where his abandoned vehicle had been found days earlier.The discovery came after an extensive five-day search that began when Berendsen's maroon Chevy Suburban was found on the shoulder northbound of I-43 on Nov. 29. Search efforts included K-9 tracking, drone surveillance, foot searches, and inspections of hunting blinds and outbuildings in the surrounding area.Berendsen had last been in contact with his family on Nov. 26, when he missed his routine nightly calls to his three children. His brother, Tyler Berendsen, had planned to attend a Packers game with him on Thanksgiving.Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in the search, including the Brown County Sheriff's Office, Green Bay Police Department, Milwaukee Police Department, Franklin Police Department, West Allis Police Department, and Belgium Fire Department.The investigation into Berendsen's death is ongoing in conjunction with the Brown County Sheriff's Office. No additional details have been released.
