Tempe police arrested a man accused of fleeing the scene after allegedly hitting a teenage girl with his car and leaving her fighting for her life on Tuesday, Dec. 3.

Around 6:30 a.m., a 16-year-old girl ran against the light on Broadway Road and Country Club Road and was struck by the driver of an SUV who was traveling west on Broadway Road. According to witnesses, the driver fled the scene, police said.

When officers arrived, they found the girl lying on the ground with severe injuries. She was taken to the hospital and remained in critical condition as of Tuesday evening.

Traffic camera footage revealed the suspect was driving a white Honda Odyssey.

Tempe police said Vicente Diaz Castellanos, 48, was arrested on suspicion of one count of physical injury with a vehicle and one count of fleeing the scene.
