Are Robust Financials Driving The Recent Rally In HIAG Immobilien Holding AG's (VTX:HIAG) Stock?

HIAG Immobilien Holding's (VTX:HIAG) stock is up by a considerable 12% over the past three months. Since the market usually pay for a company's long-term fundamentals, we decided to study the company's key performance indicators to see if they could be influencing the market. In this article, we decided to focus on HIAG Immobilien Holding's ROE.

ROE or return on equity is a useful tool to assess how effectively a company can generate returns on the investment it received from its shareholders. In simpler terms, it measures the profitability of a company in relation to shareholder's equity.

Return on equity can be calculated by using the formula:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for HIAG Immobilien Holding is:

5.6% = CHF61m ÷ CHF1.1b (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).

The 'return' is the amount earned after tax over the last twelve months. One way to conceptualize this is that for each CHF1 of shareholders' capital it has, the company made CHF0.06 in profit.

Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. Depending on how much of these profits the company reinvests or "retains", and how effectively it does so, we are then able to assess a company's earnings growth potential. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.

On the face of it, HIAG Immobilien Holding's ROE is not much to talk about. However, the fact that the its ROE is quite higher to the industry average of 4.1% doesn't go unnoticed by us. Even more so after seeing HIAG Immobilien Holding's exceptional 35% net income growth over the past five years. Bear in mind, the company does have a moderately low ROE. It is just that the industry ROE is lower. Therefore, the growth in earnings could also be the result of other factors. For example, it is possible that the broader industry is going through a high growth phase, or that the company has a low payout ratio.

Next, on comparing with the industry net income growth, we found that the growth figure reported by HIAG Immobilien Holding compares quite favourably to the industry average, which shows a decline of 12% over the last few years.
